My Emotional Response to Season 4 of Dexter

Instead of writing about my feelings about Dexter Season 4, I’ve decided to display them in a very poorly done graph.

WD TV HD Media Player

About two weeks ago I purchased a WD TV HD. It was an impulse buy, but I have to say I’m happy I bought it.

Its not an ideal media center. I use a Mac Mini with Plex for that. However I’ve been wanting something ideal for traveling. A small contraption to play avi files on my TV. For that, the WD TV HD is perfect.

It’s tiny and lightweight. Its so lightweight mainly because it doesn’t have any hard drive space. So it’s necessary to have it connected to an external hard drive. But if you have a portable hard drive, and travel a lot, it is an ideal traveling companion.

The user interface is lacking. Completely lacking. While it does support thumbnail images, they all have to be added manually. I’m sure this is mainly because the WD TV HD has no way to access the internet. It has no wireless or ethernet port. The fact that it has no wireless is also irritating because to add data to the hard drive connected to the WD TV HD, you must disconnect your external drive and reconnect it to your computer.

The WD TV HD is definitely not the perfect home media center, but if you need a way to watch your video that is portable, it really is a great solution.

Life Season One

  • I should really preface this with the fact that I’m a sucker for crime shows. Seriously I’m willing to watch almost any crime show.

  • Easily one of the cheesiest crime shows out there.

  • As far as dramatic crime shows go, this one is certainly on the lighter side. In more ways than one.

  • It is shot in a very light/bright way. Many crime shows seem to have some very dim and dark lighting to them. Even when indoors, this show is still very light. Its a nice change.

  • I enjoy the creative ways murder victims die on this show. Not all the the time, but some of the crime scenes themselves are quite creative. It makes the show fun.

  • I really like Reese, Crews’ partner. Her dark past is a bit cheesy, but I still like her chemistry with Crews. She balances him out.

The Wire Seasons One & Two

  • Season one was superbly done. Season two was also great.

  • Season one was just so intense. Season two was a bit less intense, I think its simply because the pace of the season was a bit slower.

  • The parts that upset you really upset you. It can be just plain difficult to watch.

  • Griggs, McNulty, Bunk, Freeman, Daniels, D’angelo and Omar… just awesome, awesome characters.

  • The amount of drinking on this show matches the amount of cursing on Deadwood.

  • The ‘f*ck’ scene in season one was my favorite few minutes in any crime show ever. (I’ve watched many many crime shows).

  • I hate the show for some of the stuff it does to some of its characters… but I’m sure that all of the crap that this show does to its characters makes me love it even more.

  • Its just a beautiful show. So engrossing.

Dexter Season Three

Warning: my review may contain spoilers… ;)

  • Liked this season much much more than I expected to.

  • I’ll never see Jimmy Smits the same way again.

  • I had no idea Smits was actually a good actor. He’s talented.

Gail!

For absolutely no reason I cut a clip from last week’s episode of Top Chef. It was just that funny. Of course I’m pretty sure you have to watch Top Chef to find it funny…

School Helps You Watch Television

So I have a terrible terrible final tomorrow. I’ve been studying a lot, or at least I’ve been trying to. So tonight I was taking a break and was watching a repeat of House because apparently repeats of House are my new addiction.

Anyway, at one point House asked the Team where fear was in the brain, and before Foreman answered I told him out loud “the central nucleus of the amygdala”. Right after I did, Foreman answered “the amygdala”. Now I actually understand much of the neurological terminology on the show. I guess this class was good for something.

The Switch

So, we made the switch to Verizon FIOS this week.

I had been checking the FIOS availablity page every few months to no avail. The towns next door to us had had FIOS for over a year. Then finally last week I happened to check and suddenly it was available.

We were surprised by how much money we could save with the phone/internet/cable service, even with a ton of premium cable channels and a faster internet plan and signed up right away. However, we ended up having to speak with Verizon sales three different times on three different days to get our order right. We found out the third time that the order wasn’t done right at all, and instead of a multi-stream cable card (for my TiVo HD) and a regular cable box, they were going to send us an HD cable box and a regular cable box. By the third phone sales person, though, we finally got someone who actually knew what a TiVo was and what a cable card was, and set up the order properly.
